Anxiety and Depression
I take a holistic approach when treating mood disturbance. I like to get a sense of current symptoms and move to implement techniques to address these, but at the same time I am interested in exploring the root causes of the disturbance in order to create a deeper and more stable alteration in mood and self awareness.
I generally use a blend of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to treat for mood related issues. I implement a top-down and bottom-up approach simultaneously. I take a solution focused approach, designed to move the client forward with a clear understanding of their reactions and behaviours. At the same time I am aware that mood is very related to the life circumstances and previous experiences of the individual. Therefore I like to take a thorough history and pay attention to the context in which my clients live and work.
I recommend that most clients with mood disturbances start to practice some kind of self awareness technique such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, or tai chi. Even focused activities like golf, painting or drawing can be useful. These activities form part of the treatment to begin to calm the thinking, in order to regulate your emotions more effectively, get to know your own mind and your essential self, and manage your moods better.
